When cleaning out, one thing we often forget is our drains. Slow running sinks or toilets are an annoyance but they are often ignored. But a clogged drain can cause bigger issues. To avoid the trouble that comes with a clogged drain we have to keep them clean. Here’s how:

  • Deodorize your Drain. Most of the things stuck in the drain do not smell good. The real trick is to use vinegar to deodorize your drain. Flush your sink with hot water and pour half a cup of very hot vinegar down your drain. Rinse with cold water and pour another half cup of very hot vinegar into the drain to wash away blockages.
  • Use citrus for a smelly kitchen sink. Harsh chemical drain cleaners get the job done but they are more trouble than they are worth. Running your garbage disposal with citrus rinds can help to de-grease and freshen your drains.
  • Avoid chemical pipe cleaners and use an enzymatic cleaner. Enzymatic cleaners are pricier but there are no harmful chemicals floating through the air. Enzymatic cleans use natural enzymes and bacteria to eat away at the stuff that causes your drains to clog.
  • Clean your stopper. Food, hair, and anything else that goes down the drain will get caught and stuck in the stopper in your sink. Take the stopper out of the sink and clean it thoroughly.
