Depending on where you live in the country, insulation needs to be more substantial, but that doesn’t mean that anyone can go without it. Insulation does more than keep the cold out, it also keeps cool air in during the summer months and it blocks outside sounds. The ability that insulation has to block heat transfer is rated by something called an R-value, and the higher the value the more efficient it is.
Something that some homeowners aren’t aware of is that a whole wall can have a different R-value than the insulation that was installed. This is because there are factors in play that need to be taken into consideration. For example, if there is something blocking the insulation from covering the entire wall if there are cracks or holes somewhere if the insulation is compressed or wet for some reason.
With thermal imaging, you should be able to spot shortcomings in your insulation that can be remedied.
