Having a playground in the backyard is great if you have children. It will allow your children to enjoy physical activity and fresh air, something that could improve their health, as well as, give them beneficial habits that can last a lifetime. However, there are some dangers inherent with playgrounds that should be considered. There are guidelines for how swings should be installed, for example. A safe spacing between swings is 24 inches. This will keep them from smacking into each other. There should also be a 30 inch clearance to the frame.
If you have a seesaw or similar device where there are possible pinching points, these need to be covered to prevent fingers or limbs from getting caught and crushed. You should also have the playground on a soft material. There are many options that are acceptable, but cement and asphalt are not. Instead it should be a material that will dampen a fall.
